Golf Heritage Fellowship

This program lacks only the 1.5 to 2.0 million dollars to endow it.

Concept

For those in the early stages (1-5 years experience including any relevant schooling) of a golf career who will be awarded an eleven-month fellowship located at St. Andrews Scotland in order to experience the home of golf and bring back a more seasoned and global perspective.

Purpose

To promote the core values of golf through a well promoted competitive fellowship process and to provide a succession of new professionals a potential life changing experience--for them and those they will affect. The fellow will complete a project that will enhance the core values and will return to communicate what has been experienced and learned.

Details

Fellow (and spouse) will be housed within St. Andrews and given a monthly stipend for living expenses such as food, travel, utilities and the other basic necessities. The fellow will work approximately 15-20 hours per week (depending on other activities) including teaching golf for the sports sciences department of the university, work approximately 20 hours per week on the pre-approved project to enhance golf's core values, and perform various activities, such as visits to other areas. Other fellowship living expenses will be paid, including airfare to and from the fellow's residence and a set amount for relocation expenses at the end of the fellowship term.

Process

The fellowship will be competitive, based upon experience, proposed project, character references, recommendations, and other factors. There will be four decision "gates."

The first will be through the Keepers of the Game office for basic eligibility.

The second will be a board created for the specific task of choosing ten semi-finalists.

The hosting entities in Scotland will choose five finalists.

The fellow will be chosen from these five by the Keepers board of directors. It is assumed that applicants will pay a small application fee, but that the fellowship will be supported by an endowment for that purpose.

Once this program is fully operational, if all involved parties are in agreement, a second fellowship may be created for a mid-career sabbatical. Currently: The British elements are being investigated in St. Andrews with the help of Dr. Martin Farrally of the University Sports Sciences Department.
